Descriptive Phrases

Below are some of the author’s favorite descriptive phrases from School and My Bully Experience:

Her voice is a high pitched shrill. A sound so horrifying that the shrieking of the mythological Banshee would pale in comparison. Sister Superior was a dynamo, like a nuclear bomb ready to explode.

When Sister got upset, her eyes looked like inflamed burning orbs and her cheeks would turn crimson red, her entire body would heat up like a pressure cooker until, finally, she would boil over with anger.

Sister was livid. The color of her face morphed into a deep reddish hue, even the tips of her ears turned red. Her eyes looked like oversized ping-pong balls that were about to pop out of her head, as if someone was choking her to death.

Laura’s teeth began to chatter uncontrollably, making a sound similar to one of those novelty chattering teeth. Her body began to rattle and shake from side to side, like a washing machine that went off-kilter.

The rays of the sun reflecting off the moisture that collected on the leaves produced an amazing rainbow-like display, similar to the glittering iridescent colors that appear when the sun shines against the spray of a waterfall.

Nancy was so upset she started too hyperventilate. She resembled a wounded fish, swimming erratically upside down, struggling to breath.

Suddenly, goose bumps started to pop up all over my arms, some even appeared on my chest. There were so many of them, they looked like bumps you see on a large sheet of bubble wrap.

I was so nervous that my stomach felt like I was on a plane that just encountered a massive air pocket.

I felt like I was hit with the force of a powerful tornado. I felt like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz when a tornado violently shook and lifted up her uncle’s farm house.

Our bus driver was gigantic. She always wore tight clothes that seemed to be two sizes too small. We never knew her name, so we made one up. We called her “Bulbous Bialy”, because she reminded us of an enormous bialy that was about to explode at any moment.

Xavier noticed Nancy often wore the same dress. He said sarcastically, “I see you’re wearing the same dress again. I call it, ‘The give it a rest dress’.
